The roughly annular features in the |sinδ| image correspond to the identifiable acicular spherulites in the intensity image. The `butterfly pattern' illustrates the symmetry of the alignment of the acicular crystals around the centre of the spherulite. The concentration of crystallization agent (sodium chloride) was 2.7 M and the concentration of lysozyme was 75 mg ml−1. (d) Model of the birefringence caused by acicular spherulites. The light path is horizontally in the plane of the drawing. The birefringence varies symmetrically with increasing distance, r, to the centre of the spherulite. Θ is the angle between the viewing direction and the axis of any acicular crystallite.
