Cover illustration: A superoxide dismutase V87H mutant from the anhydrobiotic tardigrade Ramazzottius varieornatus strain YOKOZUNA-1 [Sim & Inoue (2023), Acta Cryst. F79, 169–179]. Anhydrobiotic tardigrades are some of the toughest micro-animals and experience severe oxidative stress. They are thought to have potent systems to efficiently eliminate reactive oxygen species including an expanded set of genes for antioxidant proteins such as the ubiquitous superoxide dismutase. These proteins are thought to play an essential role in critical situations such as desiccation, although their functions at the molecular level have yet to be explored. Some terrestrial tardigrades such as R. varieornatus have recently been studied as potential model organisms because of their ability to survive desiccated conditions through anhydrobiosis.

Crystal structures of a wild-type superoxide dismutase from Ramazzottius varieornatus and its V87H mutant show that even though a histidine is placed at position 87, a nearby flexible loop can destabilize the coordination of His87 to the Cu atom.

The crystal structure of CmnB, which belongs to the PLP-dependent enzymes, was determined at 2.2 Å resolution. CmnB is involved in the formation of L-2,3-diaminopropionic acid in the biosynthesis of capreomycin.
